Which are the most important Spanish derbies?

Derbies are often one of the matches most looked forward to during the season. Football fans from the world over travel to Spain to watch their favourite derby. There's always a magical atmosphere in the stadium.

FC Barcelona – Real Madrid

This match is known as "El Clásico'' and is one of the best line-ups of every season. FC Barcelona is in the lead during encounters with arch-rivals Real Madrid, having won 15 matches more of the roughly 280. This is the ultimate match to attend during your football trip to the Primera División.

Real Madrid – Atlético Madrid

Traditionally, Real has often had the upper hand during the Madrid Derby. However, right now the odds are closer than ever. Atlético Madrid is striving ahead like never before. In the 2010s, these teams even came up against each other twice in the Champions League final. Here it was "Los Blancos'' who won the Cup with the Big Ears. If you're booking a football trip to Madrid, you won't get much better than this.

FC Barcelona – RCD Espanyol

Also known as the Derbi Barceloní, this is generally speaking not the most exciting derby. By overwhelming scores against each other, big brother FC Barcelona is the winner here. However, a reason to attend this match is the pleasant atmosphere between the supporters here. For young and old alike, this is a party celebrated throughout the city.

Sevilla – Real Betis

While city derbies are generally friendly in nature, this doesn't apply to this clash in Andalusia. In the city of Seville they talk about El Gran Derbi, or the derby between rich and poor. Real Betis is seen as the workers' club, and Sevilla is more for the city's elite. Out of a population of 700,000, 5% have a club card of one of the two. Seville is also the country's warmest city, and the derby completely boils over.

This is Spain's second-largest stadium, with only arch-rival FC Barcelona with a larger venue with Camp Nou. Santiago Bernabéu was a Real Madrid player who went on to run the club as its president for a whole 35 years. Under his leadership, Real Madrid grew into the huge club it is today. We recommend going on a stadium tour during your football trip.

Wanda Metropolitano

The final of the Copa del Rey takes place in the Atlético Madrid stadium every year. This stadium was originally built for the World Athletics games. Years later, it was taken over by Atlético Madrid. The stadium was substantially renovated, gaining more than 40,000 new seats. Since then, everyone has come to know it as the home of the "Colchoneros".

Mestalla

Located in a friendly working-class area in Valencia. For years now there have been plans to relocate to "Nou Mestalla", but financial issues have stood in the way. This old stadium certainly has its charm. You need to take some care on the north stand, because it's incredibly steep. The new stadium will seat 61,500 spectators.

Capacity
48,600

Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán

FC Sevilla plays all its home games in this stadium. The Spanish national team has not yet lost a match in this stadium. Football is a huge deal in Seville, and the stadium is almost always full. This stadium is just fantastic, especially against fellow Sevillian Real Betis/

From the moment that I contacted Footballbreak they couldn’t have been more helpful, the flights were good (although I’m not a fan of Ryanair ) the hotel was really good very helpful staff and in a fantastic area from where it was only 4 stops on the tram to the Camp Nou stadium. And as for the city of Barcelona we will return to enjoy its delights .

Tip: Enjoy every moment of your time in Barcelona, we had four day two were taken up around the football tour and match the other two days we toured the city on the open top bus, we managed to see a lot of the city but now plan to go back to Barcelona for a longer visit

Barca

We had a great time on our 4 day trip to Barcelona. Our hotel Villa Emelia was amazing and right next to Rocafort Metro station which made getting around the city easy. Our seats in the stadium were really good and despite it being a 010 draw the atmosphere and sheer size of the stadium was amazing. My 9 year old son loved it and wants to go back again. We also went back on our last day and done the stadium and museum tour which was really good too. I would definitely recommend attending a Barcelona game and there is so much to do in the city. We went on a catamaran tour, visited Gaudi Park, Sagarda Familia and las ramblas all using the metro.

Tip: Buy a travel card to get around the city. Much cheaper option and you can get to all of the tourist attractions including the stadium with ease.

We visited Barcelona for a belated 18th Birthday present for our Son. We booked a family room (2 double/twin rooms with a communal hall) which worked out fantastically for us. Hotel was clean and well located with very friendly and helpful staff. Camp nou lives up to the hype The seats for the match were very good. The 18 & 50 year olds were equally swept up by the atmosphere and absolutely mad local fans. We'd definitely use FootballBreak again. Emre was beyond helpful. Any questions (and I had a few) were answered quickly and courteously. The total package was everything we needed and more.

Tip: If you're going to do the Camp Nou tour don't pay for the audio guide. I'd also be tempted to miss out the 360 experience too.

This is the second time I’ve used football break and this was as excellent a service as the first time, the flight was quick and comfortable and using the metro from the airport is really easy and used it all the weekend. The hotel is modern very clean friendly helpful staff room cleaned everyday and is a great location for everything in Madrid, the Spanish fans of Real Madrid are really friendly and the atmosphere is electric. Booking with football break is so easy and will continue to use them in the future.

Tip: Other than the 2 football teams to watch in Madrid this city is one of the most stunning vibrant cities I’ve been too, please use the open top buses to see the sites they have 2 routes and it’s the best way to see the sites and if you see something you like you can get off and explore and then get back on and carry on they run till 10pm so you can tour Madrid at night all lit up it looks completely different. The royal palace and the parque de Madrid are stunning places to walk around the park is huge with loads of places to grab a drink, food and relax. Madrid is stunning with a street upon street of bars and restaurants I think if you lived there for the next century you’d struggle to eat and drink at every bar and cafe or restaurant.

Just got back from our Barcelona trip and just wanted to say a big thank you to you and your team. It was my first time booking a football match abroad and I was a little bit worried that it might not all come together. It was amazing, hotel/flights both really good, easy and convenient. Support via email, again excellent. To top it off, my seat was behind the goal, just in front of the Barcelona ultras. Amazing atmosphere. Thanks again, will defo use you guys again.

Tip: Outside of the football we did a Segway tour and that was an excellent way to see the city.

Travelled to Barcelona with my son for his 18th to watch Barca v Cadiz. Everything about the trip was great. I found booking and planning the trip with Football Break very easy and straightforward and while we were there everything went to plan and was really stress free and enjoyable. The hotel we chose (Onyx Fira) was walking distance from the stadium which was great (although quite a long walk). Our seats were better than we expected and the atmosphere was brilliant. We spent four nights in Barcelona and thoroughly enjoyed it. The stadium tour was great too, we did the players experience tour which was quite a bit more expensive but was worth it for the tour guide and the extra parts of the tour. Overall a really brilliant trip and I would definitely travel again with Football Break

Me. My wife and our 2 teenage sons went to watch FC Barcelona play at camp nou The flight over was an hour delayed but it was not a big issue. The hotel was OK. Nothing special but perfectly adequate and for the price we paid I can't complain. We had chosen the tier 3 package and as expected the seats were high in the stadium but veiw of the pitch was excellent. The game was really good and the atmosphere was amazing. 80k fans singing and shouting is something to be experienced. We all had an amazing time!!

Tip: Make sure to take photo id to the stadium and claim your tax back from the Barcelona stadium shop.

Could not recommend football break highly enough, our trip was plain sailing from start to finish, everything arrived i time and more importantly in plenty of time. Flight times were excellent and gave us another full day away, hotel onix fira is in a great spot to wander round the city and only about an hours stroll to the stadium taking in a cafe for a beer or two. Although the stadium is old it’s an incredible site and great to have been inside. I’d recommend the hospitality very modern with great tapas and a selection of drinks. We went smart casual as per tickets but plenty of people in Barcelona tops and normal trainers and didn’t seem to be an issue. The only down side to our hotel was a lack of a kettle but there are plenty of cafes right on your door step, Hector at the hotel reception was incredibly helpful and full of useful knowledge re where to eat/drink etc. I looked into doing the trip separately but I’d say it’s not worth the small saving you might make as flight times etc were nowhere near as good.

Tip: Get the comfy trainers on it’s a great city to wander round. Don’t buy stuff on las ramblas you’ll get the same stuff a couple of streets away for a third of the price
