Benfica’s stadium, Estádio da Luz

Estádio da Luz

Estádio da Luz, officially referred to as Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, is the largest stadium in Portugal. It was constructed to serve as Benfica ‘s new home and to host the Euro 2004 final. The new stadium was built on the site of the previous one and now has a seating capacity of 64,642.

If you travel to watch a SL Benfica match live, you’ll be amazed by the atmosphere as the two eagle mascots Águia Vitória and Águia Gloriosa, fly over the fans at the start of each game. It is of course possible to take a Benfica stadium tour during your football trip. Read more about it below.

How to get to the Estádio da Luz?

Estádio da Luz is an iconic landmark in Lisbon, situated approximately 8 kilometers north of the city center. The stadium is also relatively close to Lisbon’s other major stadium, Estádio José Alvalade, home to Sporting CP.

Lisbon’s public transport system is very efficient. The stadium has its own metro, train station, and plenty of bus stops. As with many other stadiums, we don’t recommend going to Estádio da Luz by car or taxi. If you’re taking a taxi though, there are specific drop-off locations around the venue.

By Metro

You can take the Blue Line and get off at either Colégio Militar or Luz station, both of which are a short walk from the stadium entrance. Please note that after the Benfica games, the metro tends to get crowded, so you might want to walk to a nearby station or wait until the rush eases.

By Bus

Operating from 5 AM to 1 AM, buses are the most convenient option. You can reach the Benfica stadium using the following routes: 726, 729, 750, 765, 767, 786, and 799, with the nearest station being the Colégio Militar bus terminal.

By Train

You can catch a direct train to the nearest stations (Benfica or Sete-Rios) from Lisboa-Oriente station. The trip takes approximately 15-20 minutes. From there, Benfica’s stadium is just a short walk away.

Estádio da Luz plan

To help you choose the best seats in Estádio da Luz  for your football match trip, here’s a breakdown of the stadium’s seating arrangement:

The Estádio da Luz is divided into 4 main sectors:

  • Bancada BTV is the east stand of the stadium.
  • Emirates Bank is the west stand of the stadium.
  • Coca Cola or Red Power Bank is the north end of the stadium.
  • Bancada Sagres is the south end of the stadium.

Each sector is internally divided into 4 levels, known as “pisos”, the Portuguese word for “floors”. From bottom to top, these are: Piso 0 (Split into upper and lower sections), Piso 1, Piso 2 (Reserved for VIP seats), and Piso 3 (The largest tier in the stadium, also divided into upper and lower sections). Guests are typically accommodated in the third tier of the north-east corner, commonly referred to as the Coca-Cola or Red Power Stand and are usually seated in sections 31, 32, and 33.

The Benfica Stadium tour: Experience Estádio da Luz like never before

No football trip to Lisbon is truly complete without a Benfica Stadium tour. You can book a tour of the Estadio da Luz facilities either independently or combined with a visit to the Benfica museum. Guided stadium tours are available every 30 minutes and last about 60 minutes. Both the stadium and the museum of Benfica are open daily, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, except on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Please note that tours are unavailable on matchdays. Tickets for the Benfica museum and stadium tour are available for purchase online or at any of the three official Benfica Stores in Lisbon, located at the stadium, in Baixa, and at Strada Outlet.
