Tottenham have long established themselves as one of England’s biggest football clubs, now they have a stadium to match their reputation. Old White Hart Lane was a great stadium, with years of history and tradition, but the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a modern stadium for a modern club; a football trip there is an incredible experience.
The original North London club
Based in the part of London with which the club shares its name, Tottenham Hotspur have become an integral part of the community it represents. Founded by a group of schoolboys in 1892, Spurs have gone on to be one of England’s most successful clubs, winning the FA Cup on eight occasions, the League Cup twice, and the original UEFA Cup twice.
It may have been a while since they last lifted a trophy, but this season it’s hard to argue the quality that this current squad has. England captain Harry Kane is beloved by his home fans, chants of “Harry Kane, he’s one of our own” can be heard from the very first minute.
Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski round off one of the most exciting and electric front threes in European Football. They have as good a chance as any to break that streak this season, booking a football trip to Tottenham Hotspur could prove to be one of the best of your life.
The best stadium in the world?
Spurs spent two seasons at Wembley while White Hart Lane was demolished and their new stadium was built, before finally moving in 2019, and it’s fair to say, it was worth the wait. With a capacity of just over 62,000, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is the third largest ground in all of England, and a price tag of £1bn made it the most expensive.
They welcomed London rivals, Crystal Palace, for their first game in the new ground with Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen getting the goals, but it was the atmosphere that grabbed all of the headlines.
Fans who went to that first game will likely be telling their grandchildren about it, and the Spurs fans have kept that atmosphere going ever since. Huge tifos of the club’s words ‘To dare is to do’ make an appearance in big derbies and European Nights, and it’s unlikely the ground will be quiet for even a minute. A football trip to Tottenham Hotspur promises one of the best atmospheres in the game.
It’s not just top quality football on offer here, it’s unlikely you’ll find such a variety of food and beverages in any ground in Europe. From a katsu curry to wood-fired pizza, you’ll find whatever you’re in the mood for here. The ground also has it’s very own brewery if you want a pint to wash it down.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium offers one of the best match day experiences in the world, a football trip here truly is a must.
What to do on a match day
On a match day, Tottenham High Street will be a sea of white and navy blue. Spurs are the kind of club that is passed down from generation to generation, and you’ll see fans of all ages walking towards the ground with nervous anticipation.
Like any football trip in England, pubs are a staple for anyone making the journey to Tottenham, luckily there is plenty of choice. The Bricklayers Arms, and the slightly more rough and ready No.8 pubs are full of locals laughing or commiserating, depending on how Spurs are playing, but they’ll always welcome those who have come to cheer on Tottenham.
As stated, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has plenty of great options if you’re after a bite to eat, but with North London’s great offering of Turkish food, it’s hard not to treat yourself to a kebab. Spurs fans have made the legendary Tottenham Star their go to for this particular delicacy, and you’ll see lines all the way down the street on a match day.
How to get to the stadium
The city of London has one of the best public transport systems in the world. You’d be able to get a bus from wherever you’re staying in the city or get the tube to Tottenham Hale or Seven Sisters and walk about 20 minutes to the stadium.
The most efficient way to get to the ground however is getting the London Overground to White Hart Lane station and walk the few minutes it takes to get to the stadium from there.
The stadium tour and more
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium isn’t just for match days, a football trip to Tottenham could last a whole weekend. The stadium tour offers exclusive access to the first-team changing rooms and a chance to explore pitch side and follow the players’ match day experience, held by many funny and knowledgeable tour guides.
The one thing that sets a football trip to Tottenham apart, however, is the Dare Skywalk. Not for the faint of heart, this 90 minute experience will have you walking around the rim of the great stadium, 46 meters above the pitch. Don’t worry, you’ll be safely secured!
Other footballing activities in London
There are few cities in the world with the footballing heritage of London. It’s fair to say that Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal make up the three biggest clubs in the city, but there are plenty of other Premier League clubs that are worth a visit on your trip.
West Ham, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Brentford all offer Premier League football, as well as stadiums that offer their own unique experiences.
A football trip to Tottenham Hotspur is a great option for anyone looking for a special time. A community club that will always represent the people of North London, there is no other club quite like the mighty Spurs.
