Manchester Derby: Top Derbies Played at Etihad Stadium

Manchester United and Manchester City. Red Devils and Sky Blues. It’s one of the Premier League’s oldest derbies, given the history and the nature of both clubs. Let’s go back in time to find out the most memorable moments of the Manchester Derby played at the City of Manchester stadium.

2004 – Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United (Premier League)

It was Manchester City’s first derby at Etihad Stadium. After 80 years playing at Maine Road, the Sky Blues renovated City of Manchester Stadium and made it their new home before the beginning of the 2003/2004 season. Nowadays, City is one of clubs in England, but that wasn’t the case back then. Sitting in 15th position, the Citizens trashed 4-1 their neighbors, who were in third position but far away from the top of the league.

2010 – Manchester City 2-1 Manchester United  (EFL Cup Semi-Finals)

In 2009, Carlos Tevez switched sides. Manchester City bought the Argentinian striker from Manchester United for £47 million pounds, a move that enraged United fans. Playing against his former club in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals, Tevez scored two goals to secure a 2-1 comeback win for City. It would be a different story in the second leg, where United came back and qualified to the final.

2012 – Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United (FA Cup 3rd Round)

This was a relief win for the Red Devils. They were annihilated 1-6 by City at Old Trafford three months earlier. With both teams battling for the league title, their paths crossed in the FA Cup. Wayne Rooney scored early for the visitors, just before City’s captain Vincent Kompany was sent off. Playing with 10 men, the Sky Blues conceded two more goals before half-time, but were able to reduce the margin in the second half.

2013 – Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United (Premier League)

The last two Premier League champions faced off in week 5 of the 2013/2014 Premier League season. Besides the rivalry, the match was supposed to determine how was the big favourite to win it this year. After the game, it was clear that City were a step above their neighbours. Sergio Aguero scored two goals in a 4-1 lopsided win that could have been worse for United.

2014 – Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United (Premier League)

Once again, a brilliant performance by Sergio Aguero sealed the triumphed for City at the Manchester Derby. He scored the only goal of the match in the second half, his 10th of the season so far. United were down to 10 men before the half-time whistle and weren’t able to create much danger upfront.

2016 – Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United  (Premier League)

18 years and 141 days. Marcus Rashford became the youngest scorer of the Manchester Derby in the Premier League era in the 16th minute of the game. With only 8 games remaining to close the season, both teams were battling for a Champions League spot, with only 4 points separating each other. United won the match, but City remained on top of their city rivals.

2018 – Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United (Premier League)

It was supposed to be a party for Manchester City, but the Red Devils Ruined it. A victory would have assure the Premier League title for the Sky Blues with five weeks to go, and with a 2-0 lead at half-time, victory was almost assured. But Paul Pogba scored twice in two minutes after the break, and another goal by Chris Smalling secured the comeback for United. The Red Devils won bragging rights that week, but City became English champions the following week.

2018 – Manchester City 3-1 Manchester United (Premier League)

A beautiful team performance gave Manchester City the victory and also the first spot of the Premier League table, while ruining United’s title ambitions. Silva and Aguero put City up 2-0, but Martial scored from the penalty spot to make it a one-goal game. The Sky Blues dominated the whole game with authority, and clinched the victory in the 86th minute with a marvellous goal by Ilkay Gundogan after 44 passes.

2019 – Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United (Premier League)

Sitting in third place, Manchester City was trying to catch Liverpool, who were comfortably leading the Premier League. But a Manchester United side battling for European spots crushed their hopes within the first half an hour of the match. Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial scored two early goals for the Red Devils, who ended up winning 1-2.

2020 – Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United (EFL Cup Semi-Finals)

After a 3-1 win at Old Trafford in the first leg, Manchester City were confident. They had a comfortable margin and they were playing at home. But Nemanja Matic scored for the Red Devils in the first half to scare City fans. Although Sky Blues dominated the game from beginning to end, they couldn’t get past goalkeeper David de Gea. In the end, City advanced despite the loss and went on to win their third Carabao Cup in a row.
